Who I am and my journey

My name is Cristea Laura. I am a psychologist with a MA in Inclusion and Special Educational Needs and Disability (ISEND).

I am visually impaired- partially sighted and currently living with brain cancer.

I love life and try my best to add to it in a positive way.

My Story

One Step at a time with Love and Passion

At the age of 14 I became partially sighted due to brain cancer. My life's journey led me to explore a few dark corners of the human mind. I have personal experience with disability, depression, suicidal tendencies, bullying and stigma.

As a child, I’ve had a perfect image of how I wanted to be when I grew up. However, life had other plans for me. During my teenage years, I had to spend time recovering from brain surgeries, radiotherapy and coma. I have tried almost everything, from conventional treatments to holistic ones, all helping in their own way but not providing a cure. I was bed-bound for over 6 months in a row, only being able to watch the sky through the bedroom window and dream about enjoying a simple walk in front of the house. Doctors kept on suggesting one medical procedure after another. At some point, doctors told me that the alternative would be death by my 20's.

Finally, after years of struggle, at the age of 21, I have decided to have my last brain surgery and live life as it is- actually enjoying it. I have continued to adhere to a healthier lifestyle, to better myself.

In 2019, I have achieved my lifetime dream of studying at a foreign university, graduating with honours from Psychology. My academic journey continued with a masters in Inclusion and Special Educational Needs (ISEND) and will probably go on for the rest of my life.

I have learned through experience that the world contains a mix of people. That there are good people in this world. That there are strangers that help you, without asking anything in return- the help I received from such people restored my faith in humanity. I love life, people and everything that surrounds it. I needed positivity to survive and, it became my philosophy of life. We have one life and we deserve to live it at its best!

I am talking a bit more about my journey in this interview offered by the very kind Ian Trevors from One Thought At A Time
